Hamilton gets a hard time as a destination and it misses the point. The city is a base, and as a base it is very well positioned: two of New Zealand's most visited attractions are within an hour, and the west coast is forty minutes away.
Here is the shortlist, sorted by drive time, with what each one actually gives you.
Under an hour
Raglan — 45 km, about 40 minutes
Black sand surf beaches, a world famous left hand point break at Manu Bay, a good main street and Bridal Veil Falls twenty minutes south. The best single day trip from Hamilton if the weather is behaving.
Cambridge — 25 km, about 20 minutes
Tree-lined streets, horse studs, Lake Karāpiro and a genuinely good cafe and antiques scene. A gentle half day rather than a full one.
Otorohanga — 55 km, about 45 minutes
The Kiwi House, where you will reliably see a kiwi awake, plus the Kiwiana displays on the main street. An hour or so, best combined with Waitomo.
Te Waihou Blue Spring — 60 km, about 50 minutes
Water filtered through the Mamaku Plateau for a century, and some of the clearest you will see anywhere. A short flat walk from the Leslie Road car park.
About an hour
Hobbiton Movie Set — 65 km, about 1 hour
44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn and a two hour guided walk. Book the timed ticket well ahead. Pairs naturally with Okoroire or the Blue Spring.
Waitomo Caves — 75 km, about 1 hour
Glowworms by boat, plus the limestone valley above with Mangapohue Natural Bridge and Marokopa Falls. Most people skip the above-ground part and should not.
Okoroire Hot Springs — 65 km, about 50 minutes
Natural thermal pools in the bush behind an 1889 country hotel. Quiet, unpolished and the best possible end to a day on your feet.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari — 45 km, about 40 minutes
New Zealand's largest predator free fenced sanctuary, with a canopy tower and a forest that sounds the way it used to.
Ninety minutes and beyond
Rotorua — 110 km, about 1 hour 20
Geothermal parks, geysers, mud pools and the country's most established Māori cultural experiences. Doable in a day, better with an overnight.
Tauranga and Mount Maunganui — 105 km, about 1 hour 30
A long white beach and the walk up the Mount for the view over the harbour. Best in settled weather.
Karangahake Gorge — 90 km, about 1 hour 15
Old gold mining tunnels, a river gorge and a walkway through both. One of the more unusual short walks in the North Island.
Kāwhia — 100 km, about 1 hour 40
A remote west coast harbour with hot water beach springs you can dig at low tide. Check the tide chart before you commit to the drive.
How to choose
- First time in New Zealand: Hobbiton and Waitomo, in that order
- Good weather: Raglan, every time
- Travelling with children: Otorohanga Kiwi House plus Waitomo
- Wet day: the caves run regardless, and Okoroire is better in the rain
- Short on energy: Cambridge or the Blue Spring, both gentle
- One big day: Rotorua, but leave early
A note on the driving
Most of these are easy sealed runs. Three are not: the Te Uku hill road to Raglan, the Marokopa Road west of Waitomo, and the coast road to Kāwhia are all narrow and winding, and they take longer than the distance suggests.
